Our History

Years ago, Wools of Wanaka's journey began under a different name and owner. Back in 1976, The Perendale Wool Shop first opened on Helwick St in Wanaka. The original owners came from a farming background who knew the wonderful benefits of wool and wanted to share it with locals and tourists.

Since the 1970s, the shop was also known as Fine Wools Wanaka and then in 2016, it became Wools of Wanaka. Even though the shop had different names, it never stopped remaining true to its ethos of producing high-quality NZ Made woollen products.

Over the years, we established long term relationships with local and overseas customers, along with the next generation coming through. In 2017, we decided to open our online store to offer our customers shipping worldwide and continue our excellent customer service.

Today you will find Wools of Wanaka located at 2 Helwick Street. Our store showcases the very best in New Zealand made woollen products and we look forward to welcoming you when you come to visit.

    Benefits of Using Natural Fibres

This blend of Merino wool and Possum Fur has many benefits making it an ideal material for you to wear every day and in any season.

    • Warmth without weight. Our blend of Merino Wool and Possum Fur creates exceptionally warm clothing that is lightweight.
    • Odour resistant. Merino wool is naturally odour resistant. This means you can wear your merino wool clothing for longer without washing.
    • Temperature regulation. Merino wool is a naturally active fibre. Merino clothing will cool you down when you're warm, and warm you up when you're feeling cold. Perfect to wear for every season.
    • Protection. Merino clothing has a natural UV barrier to protect your skin from the sun. Merino wool is a natural fire retardant so will not ignite if comes inconstant with a naked flame or intense heat.
    • Wrinkle-resistant. Merino wool fibre has elastic properties which allow your garment to not retain any creases.
    • Pill-resistant. When Merino Wool is combined with possum fur it becomes highly pill-resistant which allows your knitwear to stay looking new.

    Merino Care

Please see each brand’s care label when washing your merino garment.

Possum Merino Blends do not require much washing, often airing the knitwear is all that is needed. To remove any stains or spots, use a gentle sponge on the garment.
